Reception with Maestro Maazel

From September 23 through October 29, NCNK was pleased to be a co-sponsor of "Inside North Korea with the New York Philharmonic," an exhibit of photographs by Mark Edward Harris documenting the orchestra's historic trip in February 2008. The photographs included pictures of the performance, master classes with North Korean musicians, North Korean dancers and scenes of Pyongyang. Harris's award-winning book Inside North Korea was released by Chronicle Books in 2007.

On October 5 at 2 PM Maestro Lorin Maazel, the Music Director of the New York Philharmonic was the honorary host of a reception for the exhibit at the Katzen Arts Center, as described in American Today. On October 7 former secretary of Defense William Perry discussed his trip to Pyongyang to attend the concert as well as other cases when music and diplomacy intersected. The free exhibit was shown at the Katzen Arts Center at American University. The exhibit was co-sponsored by the National Committee on North Korea, the Music Program of the College of Arts and Sciences at American University, the School of International Service at American University and The National Unification Advisory Council's Washington Chapter. The photographs appeared courtesy of The Korea Society.
