The Korea Club: Assessing the Evolving Threat from North Korea

The Korea Club, a joint project of the Korea Economic Institute (KEI) and the Committee for Human Rights in North Korea (HRNK), will host Mr. Markus Garlauskas for an off-the-record discussion in the evolving threat for North Korea. 

Markus Garlauskas has served as the National Intelligence Officer for North Korea on the National Intelligence Council at the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) since July 2014. He oversees the production of coordinated intelligence community strategic analysis on North Korea while serving as the DNI’s senior subject matter expert and analytic advisor on North Korea issues in support of the DNI's role as the principal intelligence adviser to the President. From 2002 to 2014, Mr. Garlauskas served on the staff of United Nations Command, Combined Forces Command and U.S. Forces Korea in Seoul, including as Chief of Intelligence Estimates and Chief of Strategy. In the latter capacity, he led a multinational team of strategists, served as the principal civilian advisor on strategic political-military issues to three successive commanders, and worked closely with South Korean counterparts on strategies for countering North Korean missiles and WMD. For his work in Korea, he received the Joint Civilian Distinguished Service Award, the highest award for a civilian from the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. He holds a Master of Arts in National Security Studies from Georgetown University.



The dinner will start at 7:00 pm, followed by the speaker’s presentation and Q & A session. The program will conclude at 9:00 pm. The cost of the dinner is $25.00, payable at the door by check, cash or credit card.
