The United States has long promoted trilateral foreign policy and security cooperation among its key allies in Northeast Asia (Japan and South Korea), prompted by North Korea’s nuclear weapons and missile development. North Korea remains a trilateral priority, but there are other important—and evolving—regional undercurrents that pose new challenges for the three countries, including a more powerful China, dramatic technological change, and broader regional dynamism involving Southeast Asia and India, accompanied by stronger nationalist tendencies and heightened competition.
Three veteran diplomats (and senior members of the Trilateral Dialogue Initiative) will share their views about North Korean diplomacy and discuss ways that the United States, Japan, and South Korea can adapt trilateralism to changing regional dynamics. Daniel Morgan Graduate School’s Thomas Cynkin will moderate.
The event is co-sponsored by the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace and part of the Trilateral Dialogue Initiative (TDI), a foreign policy dialogue series organized by the Carnegie Endowment, Daniel Morgan Graduate School, the Japan Institute for International Affairs, and the Korea National Diplomatic Academy.
