Dr. Bruce E. Bechtol Jr., author of five books on North Korea, including North Korean Military Proliferation in the Middle East and Africa: Enabling Violence and Instability (University Press of Kentucky, 2018), will address the illicit North Korean exportation of arms and military personnel to countries such as Iran and Syria and non-state actors such as Hezbollah and the Houthis. Dr. Bechtol will highlight the threat the North Korean regime poses to stability in the Middle East and to the security of close U.S. partners and allies. HRNK Executive Director Scarlatoiu will address the nexus between North Korea’s security threats, its procurement of hard currency through illicit exports and human rights violations, focusing on issues including North Korean workers officially dispatched to the Middle East.
