Nazanin Zadeh-Cummings is an Assistant Professor of International Relations and Humanitarian Action at the University of Groningen in the Netherlands. She has been researching issues of humanitarianism, engagement, and international relations related to North Korea since 2014. Nazanin’s research has been published in peer-reviewed academic journals such as Third World Quarterly, Journal of Humanitarian Affairs, and Australian Journal of International Affairs. She has written pieces for media outlets including NK News, The Diplomat, The Lowy Institute Informer, and The New Humanitarian. Nazanin also publishes open access, practitioner and policy-focused briefs through organisations including the National Committee on American Foreign Policy (NCAFP) and Centre for Humanitarian Leadership (CHL).
Before joining the University of Groningen in 2023, Nazanin was a Senior Lecturer in Humanitarian Studies at Deakin University in Melbourne, Australia. She also served as the Associate Director of Research for the CHL, a Deakin-Save the Children Australia partnership. Nazanin was a 2022 Next Gen Korean Peninsula Policy Specialist with the NCAFP. Since 2022, she has sat on the board of the International Humanitarian Studies Association.
Nazanin holds a Graduate Certificate in Higher Education Learning and Teaching from Deakin and a PhD in Asian and International Studies from the City University of Hong Kong. She also earned joint Master’s in International Humanitarian Assistance from Ruhr-University Bochum in Germany and Universite catholique de Louvain in Belgium. Additionally, she earned a Certificate in Political Studies from the Grenoble Institute of Political Science in France and a Master’s in International Relations from the University of Edinburgh in Scotland.
Nazanin speaks Spanish and French, and is a student of Korean and Dutch. She is originally from Massachusetts.
